Born in 1956, in Amborzasco (Genova), Enzo Cariati died prematurely in 1992 in Genova. He was a reclusive artist, interested in theatre and visual arts. Carioti began his artistic life as a painter, using various supports, paper and canvas. Later, between 1985 and 1992, he detached himself from bi-dimensional painting in order to devote himself to the reproduction of works belonging to several fields (history of art, photography, advertising, high fashion, cinema, set design). Carioti was also fascinated by mechanics, cataloguing and mass-transit systems. Thanks to his broad knowledge, and an amazing manual ability, he succeeded in creating optical illusions and depth effects. For instance, he overlaped and wove slips of cardboard, playing with light and shadow, on a background created from tissue paper or Plexiglas. In order to appreciate one of Carioti's productions, with its different layers of materials and images, we must explore deeply into it and look behind the surface. It is precisely there that we get a glimpse of Carioti's private views of the world
